Giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis)

The giraffes are the tallest terrestrial animal, reaching a maximum size of up to 6 metres. The most characteristic feature is their long neck, which is very useful to assimilate food from the very large trees, like foliage for example. Both sexes have two horns upon their head to defend themselves from any offenders. In the breeding season, the males fight against each other using their horns. During this struggle, they are able to knock out themselves.

Because of the fact that giraffes prefer plants as their food, they are called herbivores.

Their natural habitat is in sub-Saharan africa, especially in gras steppes. Giraffes are capacity-strategists, which means that they have a long lifespan with 25 years but also just a few progenies: Females are with just one calf for 15 months.
