Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)

description of the animal

Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus)

Information:

The european hedgehog is a species of the hedgehogs who can be found in europe, especially in the north and west. Characteristic for this kind of hedgehog is its huge amount of quills, which are up to 5000 from his head up to his tail.

Hedgehogs make use of their quills to defend themselves from any hunters, like birds and foxes. During this process, they roll themselves up looking like a ball, which is very useful for them. A feature of them is that they are resitant against snake venom, which makes it easier for hedgehogs to fight against them.

Hedgehogs themselves prefer smaller animals like beetles, worms or snails. The european hedgehogs are solitaries and make hibernation. They are able to reproduce themselves very often and are having four to five descendants. The european hedgehog is least concern, its population is constant for years.
