Red Uakari (Cacajao calvus rubicundus)

The red or scarlet face Uakari is characterized by its red, hairless head and lives in the north-western South America. He lives in large groups and feeds primarily on hard-shelled fruits. Red Uakaris are the largest of the Sakiapes, they reach a body length 54-57 cm. The tail is shortened, as in all Uakaris and measures only 14 to 19 centimeters (about one-third of body length). The weight is 2.9 to 3.5 kilograms. Their fur is long and shaggy, its color varies depending on the subspecies of white-gray to yellowish to reddish brown. The face is hairless and bright red colored, flat and wide. Characteristic features are widely spaced nostrils. The end may sparsely hairy or hairless, be at the throat may grow longer, beard-like hair.

The food of the Red Uakaris consists mainly of hard-shelled fruits and unripe seeds. On a smaller scale, they also eat flowers, leaves and insects. In the rainy season, they keep on searching for food in the upper layers of the trees in the dry season, they sometimes look at the bottom for fallen fruits and seeds.
